Rooftop Tent FAQ
We've compiled information on compatibility, installation, sizing, usage, and shipping for FELDON SHELTER rooftop tents that you may want to check before purchasing.
01Before Purchase
Can I consult about vehicle compatibility and installation before purchasing?
Yes, we offer consultations regarding vehicle compatibility, roof rack selection, and installation prior to purchase.
The optimal combination of rooftop tent varies depending on the vehicle model and type of roof rack. If you have any concerns, please consult us with information about your vehicle's make, model year, and any currently installed carriers or racks.
How many types of rooftop tents are there?
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent is available in multiple sizes and colors.
Regular and Extended models have the same mattress size and interior space, but differ in the rear extension. Please choose according to the number of users, vehicle size, and camping style.
02Installation & Compatibility
What vehicles are compatible with the Crow's Nest rooftop tent?
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent is designed to be installed on vehicles that can accommodate an appropriate roof rack or base carrier and meet the load capacity requirements of both the vehicle and the rack.
The roof structure of the vehicle, the method of rack installation, dynamic load capacity, and stability during use vary by vehicle model. Please check the specifications of your vehicle and roof rack before purchasing.
What do I need for installation?
You will need a base rack, crossbars, roof rack, or roof cage compatible with your vehicle. The name may vary by manufacturer.
FELDON SHELTER recommends a combined minimum dynamic load of 75kg or more for roof racks or roof cages.
Conditions vary for each vehicle and rack, so please be sure to check the rack manufacturer's specifications and the vehicle's load capacity before installation.
What is dynamic load rating?
Dynamic load rating refers to the maximum weight that a roof rack can support while the vehicle is in motion.
When choosing a rooftop tent, it's important to consider not only the weight of the tent itself but also the load applied to the vehicle and rack while driving.
Can I also consult about roof racks?
Yes, you can consult us about choosing a roof rack.
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent is designed with adjustable base mounting channels, making it compatible with many racks and roof cages. However, since the points to check vary depending on the vehicle and rack specifications, we recommend checking compatibility in advance.
What is the required distance between roof racks?
When deploying the Crow's Nest to the side of the vehicle, the distance between roof racks should be a maximum of 1200mm, a minimum of 800mm, and ideally around 1000mm.
When deploying it to the rear of the vehicle, the distance should be a maximum of 1000mm, a minimum of 700mm, and ideally around 900mm.
Actual installation feasibility varies depending on the combination of vehicle and roof rack. Even if it doesn't fall within these numerical ranges, adjustments may be possible, so please consult us in advance.
Can I install it on a canopy?
Most canopies have fiberglass shells. We do not recommend directly attaching a rooftop tent to a fiberglass roof without structural reinforcement.
If installing, a structure or specialized rack capable of safely supporting the load is required.
03Specifications & Sizes
How much higher will my vehicle be with a rooftop tent installed?
Expect the Crow's Nest rooftop tent to add approximately 450mm to the height from the mounting bar position.
The actual total height will vary depending on the vehicle's height, the roof rack's height, and the mounting position. If you use multi-story parking garages or areas with height restrictions, be sure to check the total height after installation.
Is there a minimum height requirement for the vehicle?
There is no specific minimum height requirement for the vehicle.
However, for taller vehicles, you will need to check the ladder length and ease of entry/exit. If your vehicle height exceeds 2.1m, consider using a ladder extension.
What are the dimensions of the Crow's Nest rooftop tent?
When deployed, the dimensions are 143cm wide x 240cm long x 125cm high. The entire floor is covered with a mattress.
When stored, the dimensions are 143cm wide x 120cm long x 30cm high.
What is the Crow's Nest rooftop tent made of?
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent uses ripstop polycotton canvas for durability and UV resistance.
It features double stitching, Japanese YKK zippers, reinforced aluminum frame, and industrial stainless steel hardware.
It also comes with a removable cover and a 60mm ErgoCell high-density foam mattress with waterproof ripstop.
Does it come with a rainfly?
Yes, the Crow's Nest rooftop tent comes with a rainfly featuring adjustable straps on both sides.
The rainfly is removable, but we generally recommend using it attached for enhanced waterproofing.
04Usage & Storage
How long does it take to set up and pack away?
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent can be set up in about 5 minutes.
Remove the cover and pull the ladder to open the tent. Similarly, it can be folded up in a short time once you get the hang of it.
Can it be removed from the vehicle when not in use?
Yes. It can be removed by detaching the mounting hardware and sliding it off the mounting channel.
The estimated work time is about 10 minutes. However, since the tent body weighs approximately 54-60kg, it is recommended to have multiple people when lowering it from the vehicle's roof.
Which is better: side opening or rear opening?
The recommended orientation depends on the shape of your vehicle and how you plan to use it.
Rear opening is suitable for:
- Installation on large vehicles
- Vehicles with side-opening tailgates
- When you want to use the area near the tailgate as rain shelter while the tent is deployed
- When you want to use it in narrow camping spaces
Side opening is suitable for:
- Vehicles with upward-opening tailgates
- Medium or small vehicles
- When you want to ensure access to the tailgate
- When you want to use a bicycle rack or hitch carrier in combination
How resistant is it to rain?
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent is a 4-season tent designed for use in rainy conditions.
It features FELDON SHELTER's unique curved roof design, waterproof canvas, waxed stitching, and waterproof seam tape, all designed to keep you comfortable even in wet weather.
How resistant is it to wind?
The Crow's Nest rooftop tent has a structure that is highly stable against wind, thanks to its aerodynamically curved roof, reinforced aluminum frame, fixed base, and industrial stainless steel hardware.
However, in strong winds or severe weather, do not force its use and prioritize safety.
Can I store bedding inside when packed away?
Yes. The Crow's Nest rooftop tent uses larger hinges to make it easier to store bedding and pillows inside.
However, there is a limit to the thickness of bedding that can be stored. Please be careful not to apply excessive force when packing away.
Is it okay to fold it when it's wet?
It is possible to temporarily fold it while wet.
When packing away, ensure that windows and doors are closed. However, we do not recommend storing it wet for several days or longer. Always open and dry it before long-term storage.
Does it get hot in the summer?
The Crow's Nest is designed for easy ventilation with its gray color scheme, ventilation panels, large doors, and screened windows.
However, if all doors and windows are closed, the interior can become hot. During hot periods, ensure proper ventilation when using it.
Does condensation or humidity occur?
In cold weather or humid environments, if the windows are closed, moisture and condensation may occur inside the tent.
If you are concerned about condensation, ensure ventilation by slightly opening the side windows.
