Rooftop Tent FAQ

Q – How high is the rooftop tent?
A – Please note that the Crow's Nest Rooftop Tent will be approximately 450mm higher than the mounting bar.
Q – How many types of rooftop tents are there in total?
A – Crow's Nest rooftop tents come in three different styles and three different colors.
The regular and extended sizes have the same mattress and size, but the rear extension is different.
Q – What vehicles does the Crow's Nest Roof Top Tent fit?
A – The Crow's Nest Rooftop Tent fits any vehicle, from the smallest hatchbacks to the largest trucks and vans.
(It is structurally possible to install it on light vehicles, including the Jimny, and minivans with a 5-number license plate, but due to the low frame rigidity, it is not covered by the warranty and you do so at your own risk. In particular, caution is required when installing it on light vehicles such as the Jimny, as there is a risk of it rolling over.)
Q - How high does the vehicle need to be?
A – There is no minimum height. If the vehicle is over 2.1m tall we will provide a ladder extension.
Q – What do I need to install a Crow's Nest rooftop tent?
A – All your vehicle needs is an adjustable base rack, crossbars, and a roof rack (called different things by different rack manufacturers) or roof cage. Feldon Shelter recommends a minimum combined dynamic load of 75 kg for your roof rack or roof cage. This is technical stuff we know, so for more information on load capacities for your specific roof rack/vehicle, feel free to email us or visit your local roof rack store.
Q - What is dynamic load rating?
A - Dynamic load rating is the maximum weight that your vehicle's roof rack can take while driving.
Q – Do you sell specialist roof racks?
A - We work with roof rack specialists and the tent's adjustable base mounting channels make it easy to attach to all racks and roof cages.
Q – How long does it take to deploy and set up the Crow's Nest rooftop tent?
A - The Crow's Nest roof tent sets up in about 5 minutes. Simply remove the cover and pull the ladder and the ready-to-use tent will unfold on its own within minutes. The same is true for folding the Crow's Nest roof tent.
Q – Can the crow's nest be easily removed from the vehicle when not in use?
A – Yes, it's very easy to remove a Crow's Nest rooftop tent. All you need to do is undo the mounting hardware, slide it out of the mounting channels, and lift the tent off your vehicle's roof. This takes approximately 10 minutes. We recommend using a second hand to help lift the tent off the roof, as the tent weighs between 54-60 kg (depending on the type of Crow's Nest).
Q - What is the Crow's Nest rooftop tent made from?
A - With durability and the harsh New Zealand sun in mind, The Crow's Nest rooftop tent is made from a sturdy, UV-resistant ripstop poly-cotton canvas. With double stitching throughout, strong Japanese-made YKK zippers, a reinforced aluminum skeleton, and industrial-grade stainless steel hardware, it's basically built to last through the moonshine. We've also added a removable cotton cover and a 60mm ErgoCell high-density foam mattress with waterproof ripstop to prevent condensation.
Q - What are the dimensions of the Crow's Nest Roof Top Tent?
A – The Crow's Nest rooftop tent measures 143cm wide x 240cm long x 125cm high with a mattress covering the entire floor. The rooftop tent measures 143cm wide x 120cm long x 30cm high.
Q -Do you prefer your tent to open to the side or the back?
A - How you open the tent is up to you, but we recommend the following:
<Off the back>
For most large vehicles, "off-the-back" opening is preferred. The advantages are:
-If you have a side-opening tailgate, this orientation is suitable.
-With the tent open, you have weather protection over your head when accessing the back door.
-May fit in tight camping spaces.
- "Off the back" is not suitable for tall, upward-opening back doors.
<Off the Side>
For back doors that open above the roof line, the "Side" option is preferable. The "Off-the-Side" option is also suitable for most mid-size and small cars. The advantages are:
-The closed tent width (1200mm) means Off The Side will fit the roof dimensions of medium and small cars, as we do not recommend that the tent base be placed above the roof line.
- Mounts sideways for easy installation of bike racks and other tow bar toys from the tent.
-If it's off the side, the back door is free and there's no obstruction to access.
Q - Does the Crow's Nest rooftop tent have a rain fly?
A - Yes. The Crow's Nest Rooftop Tent has a raised rain fly that is attached with adjustable straps to either side of the tent. The rain fly is removable but is best kept in the tent for improved waterproofing.
Q – How does the Crow's Nest rooftop tent hold up to rain?
A - Imagine a torrential downpour. You'll be happy inside the Crow's Nest rooftop tent, designed for extreme weather. The Crow's Nest rooftop tent is a four-season tent. In this category, Feldon Shelter's unique curved roof design, specially treated canvas, waxed stitching, and waterproof seam taping ensure your nest is always comfortable and dry.
Q - How does the Crow's Nest roof top tent hold up in the wind?
A - The tip of New Zealand's North Island is notorious for its gale-force winds. Feldon Shelter's unique curved roof, which improves aerodynamics, has made it a success in gale-force conditions. With a reinforced aluminum skeleton, fixed base, and industrial stainless steel hardware, the Crow Nest rooftop tent is sturdy.
Q – Can I leave my bedding packed in the Crow's Nest Roof Top Tent?
A – Yes, we have included larger hinges than other typical rooftop tents available, so you can close your bedding and pillows and tuck them permanently into the tent while traveling.
Q – Can I fold the Crow's Nest rooftop tent when it's wet?
A – Yes, absolutely. Just make sure the windows and doors are closed and let the rest of the tent do its job of keeping the water out. We recommend not leaving a wet tent packed for more than a few days. Open the tent and let it dry out before storing it for an extended period of time.
Q – Does the Crow's Nest rooftop tent get hot?
A – The Crow's Nest's cool grey colour, ventilated panels, two large doors and two windows (both with mosquito nets) make it less likely to overheat. The NZ can get very hot. If you keep all the doors and windows closed, it can get hot. Elevating it off the ground allows for better ventilation.
Q – Will moisture build up inside?
A – Closing the windows in cold weather can cause moisture to build up. If moisture builds up, we recommend opening the side windows slightly.
Q - Can I attach a rooftop tent to the top of the canopy?
A - The majority of the canopy is a fiberglass shell. We do not recommend attaching a tent directly to a fiberglass roof canopy without some other type of structural support.
Q - When installing roof racks, what is the minimum and maximum distance between two roof racks? (Crow's Nest)
A – If you're running a rooftop tent from the side of your vehicle, the maximum distance between roof racks is 1200mm, and the minimum is 800mm. The ideal distance is about 1000mm. If you're running a rooftop tent from the rear of your vehicle, the maximum distance between roof racks is 1000mm, and the minimum is 700mm. The ideal distance is about 900mm. This is not specific and can be adjusted to suit your vehicle's roof rack setup. If it looks like it won't fit within these dimensions, don't worry too much as you can modify the tent to make things work.
